John Edwards’ kids only learned how to ride bikes after moving to the Black Hills. Back in his hometown of London, England, too many buses flew by on the busy and dangerous roads. John and his family decided moved to South Dakota from across the pond, and he is now the advertisement wizard at Evergreen Media.
Today, mermaids are best known as beloved figures like kind-hearted Ariel from Disney’s The Little Mermaid. But mermaids of lore weren’t friendly and kind, they were feared by sailors who believed that mermaids would either drown the crew after charming them or just make the ship crash by creating rough seas.
Evergreen Media decided to bring the mermaid superstition to life for Rapid City’s Raw Couture fashion show! Their two piece costume featured a top made out of a broken computer keyboard and a skirt made from paper; each of these materials are used in the day-to-day operations at Evergreen Media.
At Evergreen Media, “3 o’clock” is a verb.

Etymology – 3 o’clock originates from the fact that these meetings usually occur around 3 o’clock when everyone’s getting tired.
The annual Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival is one of Rapid City’s most popular events—and for good reason! Held on Saturday, Sept. 30, families took part in fun events like spectating a pumpkin catapult launch, a giant pumpkin weigh-off, a downtown chef competition, playing in the Kidz Zone, pony rides, countless vendors, pumpkin carving, a pumpkin patch, and the Black Hills Parent booth—complete with free balloons, magazines, a giant pumpkin giveaway, buckets of candy, and coupon books!
With every publication, business deal, or party, Evergreen Media always slides to homebase, so it makes sense that our doors slide instead of hanging on hinges. Glance around the Evergreen office and you’ll see a lack of doors—and the doors we do have are hung from above to slide open.
We appreciate the old-school era at Evergreen Media. Have you stopped into our offices? Chalk boards adorn the original brick wall to the left of our front desk. Before smartboards and apple TVs, before whiteboards and computers… there were chalkboards for announcements, for tools, and for teaching—ultimately, communication.
One of the most interesting aspects of the Evergreen Media offices here in downtown Rapid City is the huge shipping container turned meeting room. This container used to bring goods across the ocean, but now hosts meetings about photo spreads and our next magazine layout.
Following the modern architectural trend, Evergreen Media’s office in downtown Rapid City has visible rafters. These metallic beams give the office an industrial feeling that contrasts with the modern office furnishings. Our office is in the historic Dean Building, constructed in 1929 for a motor company. In 2016, the building laid empty so a group of locals decided to revitalize the building. It now houses not only Evergreen Media, but also a coffee shop, a baby boutique, and high-end apartments.
Instead of carpet or tiles, the Evergreen Media office in downtown Rapid City has concrete floors. They are the original floors for the building and have remained for over 30 years. Before the floors supported the Evergreen team, they were used in the Dean Motor Company – with cars scraping across the resilient concrete.
The Evergreen Media office is encased by rustic exposed brick walls. As the building was originally built in 1929 to be a motor company, the brick walls were already here when we moved-in in November 2016, but they are perfect for Evergreen!
